Netscape allows a single screen name to be used for many Netscape properties, including AIM. If you completed the registration process when you started Netscape, you have already created a screen name and password. You don't need to do any further setup. Simply choose Instant Messenger from the Window menu or click the Buddy List tab in My Sidebar. Your screen name is pre-entered. All you need to do is to enter the password you used in registration and the product is ready to use.
If you have not registered, use the following procedure:
Note: If you click "I disagree," you won't be able to complete the registration process.
Soon after the registration process has been completed, you'll receive an email confirmation. All you need to do is click Reply and type OK in the compose area. You will receive a second email detailing all of the uses of your screen name.
If you want to use more than one screen name, see Registering New Screen Names.

Once you've registered your screen name and password, you cannot change them. If you want, however, you can register multiple screen names to use with the Instant Messenger service.
To register and select a new screen name and password:

Before you can use Instant Messenger to send a message or to chat, you need to start the program and sign on.
To start and sign on to Instant Messenger:
Tip: If you want Instant Messenger to start when you start Netscape, select "Sign on at launch" on the sign-on screen.
Note: If you have previously used AOL Instant Messenger on its own or from the AOL client, and you have installed Netscape on your machine, you may have to select your preferences again. Some preferences, unlike Buddy Lists, do not transfer automatically to the Netscape version. See Setting Instant Messenger Preferences for details about resetting your preferences.

AOL Instant Messenger for Netscape is set to launch at system startup. If this is not your choice, you can turn off the option using the following procedure:
This option is controlled by the main Instant Messenger preference, but it stays in effect whether you're using AIM for Netscape or ICQ for Netscape. It opens the AIM (or ICQ) window, but it doesn't automatically sign you on unless you've also selected "Sign on at launch" in AIM or "Connect at launch" in ICQ.
Note: This option may or may not be available depending on the platform you're using. This option won't be available if you have either another version of AOL Instant Messenger or the standalone ICQ client set up to start at system launch.
For more information about Instant Messenger preferences, see Instant Messenger Preferences.

If you have registered multiple screen names, you can sign on with the name of your choice. To sign on with a new screen name that you have registered:
Note: If you have the Sign On At Launch option turned on, you'll need to sign off to log on with another name.
Note: To activate the Sign On At Launch option again, sign on using the screen name associated with that option.

Many AIM menu commands are accessible from the keyboard. This is a useful feature both to increase performance and for users who have difficulty using the mouse. Some but not all of these shortcuts are listed in the AIM menus. For a complete list, see Instant Messenger Shortcuts.

When you sign on to Instant Messenger, either from the Window menu or from My Sidebar, a Today button appears in place of the Help button at the bottom of the AIM window. Clicking the Today button brings up a minibrowser; a small browser window that appears over the main browser window if that is open or on its own if the browser is closed. The minibrowser contains links to numerous stories you may find of interest. Clicking a link in the minibrowser opens the main browser window and displays the story.

In this section: Adding ICQ Contacts to the Buddy List Deleting Buddies and Buddy Groups Checking the Status of Buddies |
When you sign on to Instant Messenger, your Buddy List appears. Folders for three groups are automatically created for you in your Buddy List Window: Buddies, Family, and Co-Workers. Add your buddies to any of these groups or create additional groups.
Note: The Buddy List appears in both the Instant Messenger application itself and in My Sidebar Buddy List tab. You can access and use most of the features of Instant Messenger by clicking the Buddy List tab in My Sidebar. You must, however, choose Instant Messenger from the Window menu to use its internal menus.
There are two tabs in your Buddy List window: Online and List Setup.

If you know a friend's screen name, you can add him or her to your Buddy List immediately.
Begin from your Buddy List Window.
If you don't know a friend's screen name, AIM can help you locate your friend using his or her email address.
Begin from your Buddy List Window in the standalone AIM version (not the version in My Sidebar).

If you have a friends who use an ICQ client that supports AIM/ICQ interoperability, you can add them to your Buddy List, either by ICQ number or by a display name that you assign. Once you've added them, you can communicate back and forth just as with any other AIM buddies. You write your messages and read their replies in the AIM window; they do the same in their ICQ client.
Begin from your Buddy List Window.
Clicking the first radio button and entering a display name puts that display name in your Buddy List. Clicking the second radio button puts the ICQ number in your Buddy List.

Non-buddies are Instant Messenger users whom you have not added to your

shows only for those users who have registered and confirmed their registration.
The presence icon next to a buddy's name disappears when he or she logs off.

If you are signed on to the AIM application (not the My Sidebar Buddy List) you can get information on any buddy. To do so:
The Buddy Info window for that buddy opens. It shows the time the buddy has been signed on or idle, and it also shows the buddy's warning level, if any. If the buddy is away and has chosen an away message, that message is displayed. If the buddy isn't signed on, no information is available. Also, if the buddy has signed on through another version of AOL Instant Messenger, additional personal information may be displayed.

If a buddy sends you mail while you are signed on to Instant Messenger, you'll see a "new mail" indicator next to the buddy's name if all of the following are true:
Double-clicking the "new mail" indicator will open Netscape Mail and display the new mail from that buddy.

In this section: |
To warn a user who has sent you an offensive message, click Warn in the Instant Message window in which you received the message.
Warn imposes a warning on the sender, hampering that person's ability to send and receive messages. With frequent warnings, the user will not be able to exchange any messages with anyone. Only after a “cooling off” period can that user send and receive messages again.
When you click Warn, you can choose to impose the warning anonymously. Anonymous warnings are less severe and the user you are warning won't know who issued the warning.

If you access the Internet through an Internet service provider, you most likely will not need to make any changes to the Connection preferences dialog box. If you access the Internet through a local area network firewall (for example, at your workplace), then your network administrator may need to supply information so that you can configure the proxy section of the Connection preferences panel.
Server Host
This field contains the default Internet address of the Netscape integrated instant messaging server, which supports both AOL Instant Messenger for Netscape and ICQ for Netscape. Under normal circumstances, you do not need to change this field. You can obtain the IP address from your network administrator.
Server Port
This field contains the default server port number to be used on the Netscape integrated instant messaging server. Under normal circumstances, you do not need to change this field.
