ISN Working Group Minutes
Monday, March 4th, 1996
Los Angeles, CA
Reported by Jodi Ito

The ISN WG convened at 3:30pm by Jodi Ito, co-chair. There was one
addition to the agenda as listed at the beginning of the meeting -
discussion of Net Day '96.

First order of business was to announce the change in co-chairs. Jennifer
Sellers has resigned and Sepi Boroumand will be replacing her.

Next, attendees introduced themselves to the group and briefly
explained their interest in ISN.

The update to FYI 22 - FAQ for Schools has been completed. It was
submitted by authors Jennifer Sellers and Julie Robichaux as an I-D and
approved by the IESG to be published as an Informational RFC.

Pat Smith from Merit will lead the relocation of the ISN document
repository once it has been reviewed by ISN members. Tom Newell and
Julie Robichaux from InterNIC, and Bill Manning from ISI volunteered
to assist reviewing the site. Bill Manning from ISI also offered to mirror
the site after it has been moved. Jodi will write the FYI describing the
repository by next June IETF in Montreal. A short discussion of the site
maintenance encouraged recruiting of an educational organization to
assume on-going maintenance.

The directory of educational projects was killed due to a lack of
progress and the increase in web search tools which facilitate
searching for school projects on the Web. The ISN goals and milestones
will be updated to reflect these changes.

The effort to publicize the FYI series to the educational community was
discussed. Suggestions included approaching international
organizations involving youths like Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts,
National Educators Assn. (www.nea.org), Computer-Using Educators.
Also Tom Newell offered to distribute information sheets at
educational conferences in the future. Jodi will draft the short summary
of the FYI series.

The group expressed concerns regarding Net Day 96. Though Net Day 96
raises community awareness of the lack of technology infrastructure in
schools, if a school is wired without regard for integration into the
curriculum, provision of on-going funding for recurring costs, training and
support, then the investment will probably be unused and wasted. The
group supported Joan Gargano and Carole Teach's comments which were
circulated on the mailing list. One suggestion was to include sample
school technology plans and wiring guidelines in the ISN document
repository.

Last item to be discussed was the ISN support for INET 96 educational
activities including organization and support of an education booth at
INET 96 in Montreal. A question was raised regarding waiver of INET
fees for those assisting. The issue will be brought up w/ the ISOC
Education committee and Educational Workshop planning group. As
details of the INET 96 Education Workshop and activities become
available, they will be posted to the ISN list.

The meeting concluded at 4:35pm
