I. Introduction
winWeb is a full-featured World Wide Web browser for the Microsoft Windows(tm) operating system. A vehicle for exploring Internet resources all over the world, winWeb includes built-in support for EINet Galaxy Directory Services(tm). Because it can operate without an active winsock dll, you also can use winWeb as a local HTML document viewer.
II. System Requirements
To use winWeb, your system must have:
- Windows 3.1 or Windows 95
- 4 Megabytes of RAM
- 5 Megabytes of free hard disk space
Note: Additional RAM and hard disk space are used for caching and improve performance.
III. Enhancements
winWeb now complies with the HTML 2.0 draft (May 6, 1995) specification (except as noted below in "Known Problems"). It no longer requires the Visual Basic dll. winWeb now includes a full-featured Usenet news reader and supports the mailto command.
winWeb now supports the following:
- Full ISO 8859-1 character set
- Corresponding entity names
- HTML forms
- Inline transparent GIF image files
Numerous improvements that aid usability have been added. Finally, winWeb is now distributed as a self-extracting file that incorporates a powerful installation program and an uninstaller.
IV. Installation Notes
a. To install winWeb, run the install.exe program from within Windows. (Use either the program manager or file manager run command.) This starts the installation program.
You will be asked to select a location and name for the winWeb directory. The installer will offer to back up any older editions of winWeb software. If you are using an evaluation copy, you must manually copy your hotlist from the prior winweb.ini file to your new winweb.ini file. The installer will offer to create a winWeb program group with appropriate program icons.
b. Some Notes on News:
Before using News, you must specify your news server. To do this, choose News and Mail from the Options menu. For news posting and followup to work, you also must specify your e-mail address. The other fields in the News Options box are optional, but can make reading news over a slow connection much faster.
Several URLs have been added to winWeb. The following are the new News function URLs you might find useful. (There are others, which you will see when you examine the URLs of the menu buttons.)
To view the newsrc file: newsrc:
This displays the Subscribed Newsgroups page, on which all the newsgroups to which you subscribe are listed. This page also allows you to subscribe and unsubscribe easily. You can use wildcards in this URL to list only certain newsgroups. For example, the following URL:
newsrc:comp*
would list only the subscribed newsgroups that start with comp.
The Navigate menu entry "News" takes you to this page.
To search for newsgroups: news:*
This URL displays all the available newsgroups on a server.
Note: This search might cause your machine to run out of memory.
You can use wildcards to search for certain types of newsgroups. For example, the following URL:
news:comp*
would list all the available newsgroups that start with comp.
To list only newsgroups with descriptions, select "Only Show Newsgroups That Have Descriptions" in the News Options box on the Subscribed Newsgroups page.
To view the subjects of articles in a newsgroup: news:group_name
For example, the following URL:
news:comp.lang.c
would list the article subjects in the comp.lang.c newsgroup.
To specify the number of article subjects displayed and whether they are threaded, use the News Options box on the Subscribed Newsgroups page.
V. Known Problems
a. winWeb does not support the following elements of the HTML 2.0 draft specification:
- .
- are not fully supported.
- Text inside
tags wraps.
- is required after , but should be optional.
- element should be monospace.
There are other minor differences from the draft specification.
b. Text entry fields on HTML forms are limited to 4096 characters per box. Text entry boxes with single lines longer than approximately 150 characters, and text entries with more than approximately 1,000 lines might not be processed correctly.
c. Canceling is erratic with some TCP/IP stacks. For example, with Microsoft TCP 3.11a, canceling will not work until some data has been received. There have been a few cases in which winWeb ceased to load new pages after a cancel command. Using the Netmanage Chameleon stack has produced the best results.
d. Drop-down "select" boxes in forms that are embedded in tags are not displayed correctly.
e. The newsreader hangs when trying to read large newsgroup files.
f. A few compressed GIF images can cause general protection faults.
g. Lowercase is required when entering access types. That is, HTTP://... will not work.
h. winWeb adds a paragraph space before an
if the previous element ends with a
.
i. If the background is not set to a solid color, there can be an alignment problem with the background pattern. It causes lines to appear at the beginnings and ends of lines of text.
j. The first anchor in a row of anchor tags is not vertically aligned.
k. When winWeb encounters an indexed page, it activates the blue question mark on the tool bar. If the tag is the last item on the page, a reload of the page might be required to activate the question mark.
j. The news reader returns a "#200 ESMTP spoken here" error message with some news servers.
k. When news is read, winWeb activates the host's news server. If the server times out due to inactivity (typically after about an hour), winWeb must be restarted to reconnect to the news server.
l. Sometimes embedded italics appear to be subscribed.
m. Sometimes the Back tool button is not deactivated when the back function is unavailable. In these cases, the button is ignored.
VI. Planned Enhancements
We have expanded our winWeb development team and are engaged in a vigorous effort to enhance and improve winWeb. We are actively working on adopting new HTML enhancements, including HTML 3.0 and other advanced technologies, as well as improving the basic program design.
VII. Helper Application
The Windows Play Any File helper application is included with this release of winWeb. This application plays all common sound formats on Windows compatible sound devices.
VIII: Packing List
winWeb is distributed as a single self-extracting file called install.exe. When this program is run, it automatically expands and installs the required files.
