asWedit is a comprehensive and easy to use HTML 2, HTML 3 and text editor
for X Window System and Motif. It offers three independent modes:
a plain text editing mode and two context-sensitive, validating modes for authoring
of HyperText Markup Language documents (HTML 2 and HTML 3) as used on
the World Wide Web and enterprise networks.
NOTE: below the asterisk (*) means a completely new or dramatically improved feature in ver. 2.5.
- * context-sensitive HTML 2x and HTML 3x modes; only tags valid in the
current context are available
- full support for all HTML 2 tags and attributes based on the RFC 1866
- full support for all HTML 3 tags and attributes based on the
HTML 3 Document Type Definition (DTD) as of 24 March 1995
- * support in our HTML 2x and HTML 3x extended modes for the latest
IETF drafts and some other more stable proposals (new tables,
client-side image maps, form-based file upload and Java applets),
and the widely used Netscape specific elements, including Frames;
support based on our own DTD's that include all the extensions;
- * creation of correct HTML 2x or HTML 3x documents (according to
the extended DTD's)
- support for different styles of editing: assistive tagging, cut and
paste, by hand and parse

- special no HTML mode for quick start-up and plain text editing
Localized resource files are available for the following languages:
English (default), Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Polish,
Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish. Commands and messages are localized for each
language but the on-line help is available only in English (U.S.).
Some localizations are incomplete though, especially in the HTML modes.

Following platforms are supported (in OS alphabetic order):

NOTE: UnixWare users can use the binary-compatible "i386.sco" version,
while FreeBSD users - the "i386.linux-aout" version under Linux emulation.
To obtain the binary distribution please download the compressed tar file
for your platform and then unpack it. For example for IRIX 5 download
a file asWedit-2.5-sgi.irix5.tar.Z. To unpack it you can use the
following:
zcat asWedit-2.5-sgi.irix5.tar.Z | tar xvf -
(the distribution will be placed into asWedit-2.5 directory).
If you want to use a localized version please download a resource file
from the i18n-resources directory appropriate for your language. For
example, to get the German resources please download the following file:
i18n-resources/AsWedit-2.5-de.tar.Z
When you obtain the software please read and accept the terms of the
License Agreement.
